SIGNET RINGS

CLAIM YOUR HERITAGE

At Atelier Torbjörn Tillander, we have a long-standing tradition of designing and crafting signet and heraldic rings for noble families. Each piece is handcrafted with exceptional quality and care. Historically, signet rings were used as a form of identification. As the name suggests, they served to seal letters and important documents with wax, allowing the recipient to verify the sender’s identity. For this reason, heraldic engravings are carved in mirror image into the gemstone, so the impression in wax appears correctly. Today, heraldic rings symbolize family heritage and belonging. They are often given to celebrate milestones such as coming of age, joining a family through marriage, or other meaningful life events.

These rings are deeply rooted in family tradition. Although the signet ring is a traditional piece, it doesn’t have to look like one. A heraldic engraving can also be featured in other types of jewelry — such as cufflinks or a pendant on a necklace. Traditionally, the gemstones used in heraldic rings are blue-toned sardonyx or orange-brown carnelian. These stones have two contrasting layers, which allows the engraved coat of arms to stand out clearly. The engraving can also be made on other gemstones or directly onto metal. All heraldic gemstones are engraved in Germany and can include the full coat of arms, or just the shield and crown.
